Trauma Therapy Designed To Heal

Choose Therapy That is Proven To Work

We’re Not “Just Talk Therapy”

Therapy That Meets You Where You Are

Trauma can shape how you think, feel, and move through the world. It can leave you anxious, disconnected, or feeling like you’re just getting by. You might struggle to relax, trust, or even recognize yourself sometimes.

Does any of this feel familiar?

You feel on edge even when life is “fine”

You get triggered and don’t know why

You shut down, disconnect, or go numb

You overthink, people-please, or stay in survival mode

You feel like you’ve tried everything, but nothing sticks

There is a reason this happens, and it is treatable.

At Innovative Counselling Ontario, we help you go beyond coping and into healing. Many people come to us after years of talk therapy, realizing that insight alone hasn’t changed how they feel inside. That’s because trauma isn’t just stored in the mind — it’s held in the body and nervous system.

Our therapists are trained in evidence-based trauma therapies that help the brain and nervous system process what has been stuck, safely and effectively.

Why Trauma Doesn’t “Just Go Away”

Trauma is the brain and body learning that the world is not safe. After overwhelming events, your nervous system can stay in protection mode, even years later.

That can look like anxiety, irritability, shutdown, disconnection, sleep problems, or feeling stuck in patterns you cannot reason your way out of.

Trauma therapy helps your system update the alarm. When your brain no longer has to scan for danger, your emotions, body responses, and relationships can start to change naturally.

Understanding the Type of Trauma You’re Experiencing

Different experiences create different nervous system responses. These two categories help us choose the safest, most effective path.

At Innovative Counselling Ontario, we understand that trauma is not one-size-fits-all. A single overwhelming event affects the nervous system differently than years of repeated stress, neglect, or relational harm. Identifying which pattern fits your experience allows us to tailor therapy in a way that feels safer, more effective, and aligned with how your system learned to protect you.

Single Incident Trauma

Single incident trauma is a specific event that overwhelms the nervous system and never fully gets processed. Even when the danger is over, your body may keep reacting as if it is still happening.

Clients often work to:

Reduce flashbacks, intrusive memories, and intense emotional spikes

Calm hypervigilance and the startle response

Release avoidance patterns and fear loops around reminders

Rebuild a sense of safety in the body (sleep, breath, grounding)

Process the event so it feels “in the past,” not present

This approach is often effective when symptoms began after a clear, identifiable event.

Complex & Childhood Trauma

Complex and childhood trauma typically develops through repeated experiences, especially in relationships, where safety, trust, or stability were missing over time. It can shape attachment, identity, and long-term nervous system patterns.

Clients often work to:

Understand triggers and long-standing survival patterns

Reduce chronic anxiety, shame, overwhelm, or shutdown

Work with protective inner parts that formed through trauma

Address dissociation safely and at a paced rhythm

Build healthier boundaries, trust, and internal stability

This work is typically more layered because the trauma was repeated and developed over years.

The Missing Key in Trauma Therapy

Research tells us that you even the most compassionate therapist with great knowledge of trauma reprocessing is not enough alone for people experiencing chronic dissociation, such as with dissociative disorders.

Our team is trained in working with dissociation as a necessary part of trauma therapy. We apply evidence based interventions to work with your system and your dissociative defenses so that we can safely and effectively treat the roots of the trauma.

If you have tried trauma therapy before and are still feeling stuck then we encourage you to reach out about this potential missing key.
